b. Graz (Styria), Feb. 10, 1888, 
d. New York (USA), May 1, 1949, painter and graphic artist. Had a 
decisive influence on the establishment of the Munich Secession (1913) 
and Graz Secession (1923) art movements, 1931-1938 in France, from 
1938 in New York. Before 1914 worked mainly as illustrator, later 
produced landscape and figure paintings ("dream figures", 
"Traumfiguren"). 1948 almost 1,000 of his pictures were destroyed in a 
fire.
