!!!Thörl-Maglern

Thoerl-Maglern, Carinthia, border station at the Austro-Italian border 
in the district of Villach-Land, alt. 634 m, located in the 
Gailitztal valley, part of the market town of Arnoldstein. - Border 
crossing checkpoint and customs office; transport. In Thoerl: Gothic 
parish church (1503) with elaborate wall frescoes (around 1475) and 
ceiling frescoes (after 1480), in the chancel "Lebendes 
Kreuz" ("Living Cross"), a major work by Thomas von 
Villach, panels depicting the Passion, high altar (1613). In Maglern: 
castle (late 16.th century); ruins of Romanesque Strassfried 
Castle (first documented mention in 1279); remains of the Roman 
settlement "Meclaria" (Roman road station); on Hoischhuegel 
hill an early Christian hall church in a fortification dating from 
late antiquity; discovery of cache of coins from the late 6%%sup th/%  
century.
