Thoerl, Styria, municipality in the district of Bruck an der Mur, alt. 
640 m, pop. 2,166, area 65.28 km%%sup 2/%, industrial town 
on the Thoerlbach Stream, south of Aflenz (health resort), on the road 
to Mariazell. - Metal processing industry (special-purpose wires, 
construction steel), wood processing industry. - Thoerl is one of the 
oldest metal processing towns in Styria: forge hammers were produced 
there from the 14%%sup th/%  century, armourers worked in the town 
from 1469; overlooking the town are the Schachenstein ruins (1471); 
castle, originally built as a roadblock in the 2%%sup nd/%  half of 
the 15%%sup th/%  century, annexes from around 1630 and 1740, in 
the west tower, the Barbarakapelle (Chapel of St. Barbara, built in 
1740) with ceiling frescoes and 2 altarpieces by J. A. Moelk, in the 
central building, medieval tower with gate; parish church (1962/1963); 
roadside chapel with late Gothic carved crucifixion group (around 
1515).
