b. Vienna, March 23, 1888, 
d. Vienna, March 22, 1976, physicist, father of Walter  Thirring. 
1921-1938 Professor of Theoretical Physics in Vienna; achieved 
international recognition as advocate of the relativity theory 
(Thirring-Lense effect); 1938 forced to retire, 1946 again Professor 
(1946/47 Dean), 1957-1963 member of the Bundesrat (Austrian Social 
Democratic Party, SPOe). Actively engaged in the  Peace Movement, 
articulated the idea of unilateral disarmament for Austria (Thirring 
Plan).
