Officer in the Tsarist army, in 1918 joined the Red Army, 1942 Commander in Chief of the 57th Soviet Army at Stalingrad, Oct. 1943 to May 1944 commander of the 4th Ukrainian front (reconquest of the Crimea), until June 1945 commander of the 3rd Ukrainian front, with which he won parts of Hungary and eastern Austria (conquest of Vienna by April 13,1945). He met with US troops at Erlauf, Lower Austria on May 8,1945.
