b. Bozen/Bolzano (South Tyrol), Oct. 10, 1878, 
d. Vienna, Oct. 18, 1933. Narrative author, dramatist, essayist. 
Director-General in the Vienna Ministry of the Interior, member of the 
"Duererbund" and of the conservative "Kulturbund", 1931-1933 president 
of the latter. As a Catholic author was very pessimistic about culture 
and very critical of civilization; in his work ("Der grosse 
Fruehling", 1908; "Sieg der Jungfrauen", 1910) he pleads for real 
feelings and faith. His biographical novel "Goethe" (2 vols., 1923) 
became very popular.
