b. Gries near Bozen/Bolzano (South Tyrol), Jan. 16, 1912, 
d. Berlin (Germany), Oct. 20, 1998, writer and elementary school 
teacher. Until 1944 T. was the most successful Austrian author of his 
generation, wrote classicist novels and tales; co-worker of the 
magazine "Das innere Reich". After 1945 he preferred autobiographical 
and psychological stories. In his late works he discusses the problems 
and scope of story-telling (Aufschreibung aus Trient, 1956). Lived in 
Berlin from 1950 until his death. Numerous prizes.
