Until 1944 T. was the most successful Austrian author of his generation, wrote classicist novels and tales; co-worker of the magazine "Das innere Reich". After 1945 he preferred autobiographical and psychological stories. In his late works he discusses the problems and scope of story-telling (Aufschreibung aus Trient, 1956). Lived in Berlin from 1950 until his death.
