From the Middle Ages onwards clocks on the towers of churches and town 
halls and clocks on town towers as in Enns and Judenburg became 
significant features of the towns; they showed that time was becoming 
more and more important for the people. The clock in the tower of St. 
Stephen´s Cathedral was first mentioned in 1417; the city symbol 
of Graz, the Clock Tower, was built between 1559 and 1569.
