!!!U-Bahn, Wiener Underground Railway, Vienna (U-Bahn): Following the municipal council decision on the construction of the Vienna underground railway of January 26, 1968, the basic underground network consisting of 3 lines was completed in 1982: U 1 Reumannplatz - Kagran; U 2 Schottenring - Karlsplatz (runs mainly along the route of the former "2er-Linie" tram line) and U 4 Huetteldorf - Heiligenstadt (former Stadtbahn transit line). The U 3 line now (1999) runs from Erdberg to Ottakring, the extension to Simmering (under construction) will be completed by the year 2000. The U 6 line (former "Guertellinie" of the Stadtbahn, running along Guertel ring-road, with extensions in the south to Siebenhirten and in the north to Floridsdorf) was completed in 1996. The total trackage of the Vienna underground railway is (1999) 58 km long; building costs amounted to more than 90 billion ATS until 1998 (most expensive kilometre: Mariahilfer Strasse street, 2.1 billion ATS, most inexpensive kilometre: Kagran, elevated track, 350 million ATS). Plans for the period after the year 2000 include the extension of the U 1 from Kagran to Leopoldau and the construction of the U 2/5 from the city centre (Schottenring) via the Prater Stadium to Stadlau. %%language [Back to the Austrian Version|AEIOU/U-Bahn,_Wiener|class='wikipage austrian'] %% [{FreezeArticle author='AEIOU' template='Lexikon_1995_englisch'}] [{ALLOW view All}][{ALLOW comment All}][{ALLOW edit FreezeAdmin}]
