UNICEF, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, 
founded in 1946 for the benefit of the countries most direly affected 
by the Second World War. Austria has been a member since 1947. In the 
post-war years Austria received financial and material assistance in 
the order of $ 7 million. Currently UNICEF's activities 
focus on improving the social and economic situation of children and 
their mothers in developing countries. Activities target both 
political decision-makers (World Summit of 1991) and the general 
public (greeting card schemes). Total UNICEF revenue in 1994 amounted 
to $ 866 million. Contributions by the Austrian government 
to UNICEF totalled ATS 21 million in 1994, the contribution 
of the Austrian National Committee (sale of greeting cards, private 
donations) came to more than ATS 31 million in 1993.
