b. Vienna, Sept. 17, 1904, 
d. Woodland Hills (USA), Sept. 30, 1972, film director. Studied 
architecture in Vienna and worked as a stage designer for M.  
Reinhardt at the Theater in der Josefstadt. With Reinhardt travelled 
to the USA, where he worked amongst other things as assistant to 
F. W. Murnau. 1929 debut as director ("Sunday People", with R. 
Siodmak), subsequently art director for Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM). 
Later produced B-movies. After 1942 made some of his best films in 
Hollywood, the last of which was "The Cavern" (1965).
