!!!Universal Edition, UE
Universal Edition, UE, music publishers, founded 1901, since 1914 the
seat of the company has been situated in the building of the
Musikverein concert hall. In 1907 its manager E. Hertzka started to
turn the UE into a specialised publishing company for contemporary
music, a policy which was continued under its manager H. Winter from
1932 (contracts with G. Mahler, A. Schoenberg, F. Schreker, A.
Webern, A. Zemlinsky, E. Krenek, etc.). Between 1919 and 1939 the UE
published the "Musikblaetter des Anbruchs" and 1920-1945 the
Denkmaeler der Tonkunst in Oesterreich. In 1938 the company was
aryanized, and from 1940 to 1945 it was merged with the Peters-Verlag
publishing company of Leipzig. In 1945 Yella Hertzka re-established
the UE in its original form. Today, the company mainly publishes works
by contemporary composers (G. v. Einem, F. Cerha,
P. Boulez, K. H. Stockhausen, M. Kagel, R.
Haubenstock-Ramati, etc.).
