!!!Unterberger Unterperger, Michael Angelo

Unterberger (Unterperger), Michael Angelo, b. Cavalese (South 
Tyrol), Aug. 11, 1695, d. Vienna, June 28, 1758, 
painter, the most important artist of the U. family; brother of Franz 
Sebald  Unterberger. After studying in Venice, he first worked in 
Bozen/Bolzano and Passau, and then moved to Vienna in 1737; in 1738 he 
became a member of the Academy and was the first "rector 
magnificus" of this institution (1751-1754 and 1757/1758), a 
title awarded by Maria Theresia in 1751. His artistic works were 
noticeably influenced by P.  Troger. Among his works are altar 
paintings for the Cathedral of Brixen/Bressanone, St. Stephan´s 
Cathedral and Michaelerkirche church in Vienna, Neuklosterkirche 
church in Wiener Neustadt, and the parish churches of Bischofstetten, 
Schaerding, Tienzens and Wilten.
