Untersberg Mountain, massif forming part of the Salzburg Limestone 
Alps, southwest of the city of Salzburg, with the Salzburg and the 
Berchtesgaden  Hochthron Peaks (one in Salzburg, the other in 
Berchtesgaden, Germany) and the Geiereck peak (1,805 m). Consists 
of dolomite, Dachstein limestone and Lias limestone. Its northern part 
belongs to Austria, the southern to Germany. The heights of Untersberg 
Mountain are covered by karrenfelds (rugged limestone rocks). Many 
caves, including Kolowratshoehle, Drachenloch and Schellenberg-Ice 
Cave (show cave). Numerous legends are associated with the Untersberg. 
The Untersberg Mountain nature park affords environmental protection. 
The Fuerstenbrunn spring supplies water to the city of Salzburg. 
Marble quarries near Groedig; the yellow and reddish-white Untersberg 
Marble is an important export commodity. Untersberg-Bahn (passenger 
ropeway) from St. Leonhard up Geiereck peak. Mountain refuge: 
Zeppezauerhaus (1,664 m).
