Pretrial Detention, can only be imposed by the competent investigating 
magistrate in cases of strong suspicion and for cause (danger of 
absconding, collusion, or further criminal activity), unless milder 
alternatives such as bail are not deemed sufficient. The first warrant 
of arrest is valid for 14 days, the second for one month, all further 
ones for two months. The period of pretrial detention is limited (6 
months, under certain circumstances 2 years). The detainee has to be 
represented by counsel.
