Utrecht, Peace of: 1713, after Emperor Joseph I had died (1711) 
and Karl VI succeeded to the throne, allies of the emperor 
started negotiating with France, in order to bring the War of the  
Spanish Succession  to an end and to prevent the Habsburg-Spanish 
Empire from reviving. The first of a series of 7 treaties put an 
end to the British-French War on April 11, 1713. France 
concluded treaties of peace with Prussia, Portugal, and Savoy on the 
same day; the treaties between Spain and Great Britain and between 
Spain and Savoy were signed on July 13; the treaty between France 
and the States General (Holland) followed on 
November 4, 1713; the Holy Roman Emperor, Karl VI, 
concluded peace with France in the Treaties of Rastatt on 
March 6, and Baden on September 7, 1714.
