Van der Bellen, Alexander, b. Vienna, Jan. 18, 1944, economist 
and politician (Green Party). 1968-1971 university assistant in 
Innsbruck, 1972-1974 at the Science Centre in Berlin, from 1976 
University Professor in Innsbruck. From 1980 professor of Political 
Economy at the University of Vienna. Specialises in public sector 
economy as well as environment and transport policy. From 1994 member 
of the Nationalrat, from 1995-1999 Deputy Party Chairman of the Green 
Party and Party Chairman since 1999; from 1997 federal spokesman of 
the  Green Party.
