Vandals, East Germanic people, evidence of settlement in the 
4%%sup th/%  century in  Pannonia, moved from Pannonia across Austria 
to Gaul and Spain in 406, together with the rest of the Alani and the 
Suebi; they were Arian Christians. King Gaiseric (429-39) founded the 
first independent Germanic kingdom on Roman territory in North Africa. 
The Vandals controlled the Mediterranean Sea with their fleet and 
sacked Rome in 455. Their kingdom was conquered in 533/34 by the 
Byzantine general Belisarius.
