Vaugoin, Carl, b. Vienna, July 8, 1873, 
d. Krems (Lower Austria), June 10, 1949, provincial civil servant, 
officer and politician (Christian Socialist). 1920-1933 member of the 
Nationalrat; 1921 and 1922-1933 Federal Minister of Military Affairs, 
in 1929-1930 Vice-Chancellor, Sept.-Dec. 1930 Federal Chancellor, 
1933-1936 president of the federal railways; 1938-1945 persecuted. 
After 1922 led an embittered battle for political power in the army, 
reduced the influence of the Social Democrats to the advantage of his 
own party.
