Velden am Woerther See, Carinthia, market town in the district of 
Villach-Land, alt. 460 m, pop. 7,970, area 
52.94 km%%sup 2/%, exclusive health resort and spa for summer 
tourism (725,392 overnight stays in 1992) and popular venue for 
congresses, on the west end of Lake Woerth; ship station. - Casino 
with congress hall, administrative office of the health resort, golf 
course, Kurpark. 2,246 employed persons (1991), around 74% of whom in 
services (mainly hotel industry and restaurant business), production 
of lighting fixtures, production of special machines. - Documented 
mention in 1150; parish church (1937, enlarged in 1962), Baroque high 
altar (around 1680); St. Jakob's church (17%%sup th/%  century); 
Renaissance Palace (built in 1590, rebuilt in 1920, today hotel with 
park); in Kranzlhofen, Romanesque-Gothic parish church with late 
Baroque ceiling painting and high altar; former late Gothic fortified 
church at Koestenberg with Baroque high altar (around 1660); in 
Unterwinklern, Romanesque-Gothic filial church with fresco (around 
1460-70). In the vicinity, Lake Forstsee.
