Verbruederungsbuecher ("brotherhood books"), lists of names of patrons 
and benefactors of a monastery as well as people who were spiritually 
linked with a monastery through a prayer brotherhood. All large 
monasteries kept Verbruederungsbuecher in the Middle Ages. In Austria, 
the Salzburg Verbruederungsbuch, for example, which was created around 
783 and continued until the 13%%sup th/%  century, constitutes an 
important source of historical and linguistic information.
