Surveying, carried out by public institutions, such as the Federal 
Office for  Weights, Measures and Surveying and by Surveying Offices 
as well as by independent surveyors. Fields of activity are drafting a 
national cadaster (digital land register, or field in which Austria 
has a leading position world-wide), regular documentation of all 
changes in property (partition plans) and, increasingly, creating 
geographical information systems for administration and transport. The 
legal basis is the 1968 Surveying Act, Surveying Rules and 
Regulations, and the Civil Engineers Act.
