Villafranca, Peace of: On 8 July, 1859, a truce was concluded in 
Villafranca (province of Verona), ending the Battle of  Solferino. It 
resulted in a preliminary peace, on 11 July, 1859, between Austria and 
its enemies France and Sardinia, which was formally confirmed on 10 
November, 1859, in Zuerich. Austria gave up Lombardy (except for 
Mantua and Peschiera) to Napoleon III, who in turn passed it on 
to Sardinia.
