Volley Ball: developed in the USA towards the end of the 19th century,
came to Austria around 1925; the first volley ball sections were
founded as parts of the Sokol and DTJ gymnastics clubs run by the
Czech minority in Vienna in 1927; they were forbidden in 1938. After
1945 volley ball was again promoted by clubs of the Czech minority and
the communist Freie Oesterreichische Jugend youth organisation. In
1953 the Austrian Volley Ball Association (Oesterreichischer
Volleyballverband - OeVV) was founded in Vienna, where the first
Austrian championship was organised but initially boycotted in
particular by clubs in western Austria, since the sport was widely
regarded as one dominated by communists. Volley ball has been an
Olympic discipline since 1964. Teams from the Czech Republic,
Slovakia. Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Austria play in the
"Superliga", which was founded in 1991. VC Donaukraft Wien
(men) and Post SV Wien (women) are the first Austrian teams that have
been members of the top league since 1994. In that year the Austrian
association had more than 15,000 members in 290 clubs.
