Woergl, Tirol, town in the district of Kufstein, alt. 513 m, pop. 10,054 (pop. 1981: 8,610), area 19.68 km2, railway junction, school and service centre situated at the mouth of the Brixental valley within the Inn valley. - District forest inspection, branch office of the regional health and insurance agency, forestry administration, probation office, regional office of the Caritas Catholic welfare organisation, family and social counselling centre, day centre of the Lebenshilfe charity (engaged in life counselling), psychological school service, therapeutical centre for handicapped children, meeting centre of the Salzburg Archdiocese, Islamic cultural centre, Bundesrealgymnasium secondary school, commercial academy, commercial school, vocational school of trade and commerce, adult education centre, area commission for torrent and avalanche control; Woergl-Muellnertal, Einoeden (constructed in 1901) and Leukental (constructed in 1913) power stations; 6,349 persons in gainful employment (1992), of whom 69% work in the service sector (mainly in trade, large warehouse of a trading chain, transport), chipboard production, production of knitwear, construction of vehicles, tourism (138,020 overnight stays in 1992). - Remains of a Roman villa rustica (2nd century A.D.); first documented mention 1120, granted the status of town in 1951; parish church (1740) repeatedly altered in the 19th and 20th century. In front of the church, memorial for dead soldiers who died in Tyrol's Fight for Freedom in 1809; museum of local history and culture; ruins of Werberg castle.
