Waitz, Sigismund, b. Brixen/Bressanone (South Tyrol), May 29,
1864, d. Salzburg, Oct. 30, 1941, cleric. In 1913 Suffragan
Bishop of Brixen/Bressanone, 1921-1938 Apostolic Administrator of
Innsbruck-Feldkirch, Archbishop of Salzburg (1934-1941). Great social
achievements; supporter of the Salzburg University plan, famous for
his pastoral letter on social matters "Lehren und Weisungen der
oesterreichischen Bischoefe ueber soziale Fragen der Gegenwart"
(1925), which paved the way for the encyclical "Quadragesimo anno".
