Grieskirchen, alt. 367 m, pop. 3,602, area
34.23 km%%sup 2/%, on the Aschach river, in the hills of the
northern Hausruckviertel region. - Agricultural trade school;
manufacture of agricultural machinery and lifts, weaving mill, bakery,
building trade, commercial firms; sand pit. - First documented mention
around 1150; late-Gothic parish church, Baroque alterations 1738-1748,
neo-Baroque altar decoration with paintings by M. J. Schmidt
(1799), life-size figures of saints (2%%sup nd/% quarter of the
18%%sup th/% century); Altenheimkapelle chapel (1647) with
late-Baroque altar; Weidenholz Castle (first documented mention 1276),
a moated castle completely renovated in 1876; collection of items of
local historical and cultural value (founded 1957) in the house where
the composer W. Kienzl was born, with memorial room dedicated to him.
