Waldheim, Kurt, b. St. Andrae-Woerdern (Lower Austria), Dec. 
21, 1918, diplomat and politician (OeVP, Austrian People´s 
Party). 1968-1970 Federal Foreign Minister, 1971-1981 
Secretary-General of the  UN. 1971 as OeVP candidate was defeated by 
F.  Jonas in the presidential elections; ran again for president in 
1986. His hesitation in giving information on his role as an officer 
of the German armed forces in World War II led to international 
criticism. After his election as Federal President (1986-1992) was 
diplomatically isolated. His election as Federal President also led to 
a fundamental discussion on Austria's role in the Nazi era.
