Wander, Fred, b. Vienna, Jan. 5, 1917. Narrative writer,
dramatist, author of books for young people; the son of Eastern
European Jewish parents, he was imprisoned in Auschwitz and Buchenwald
concentration camps 1942-1945; after the war worked as a photographer
and journalist. In 1955 moved to East Germany with his wife Maxie
Wander. 1983 returned to Vienna. Became famous through his books for
young people ("Taifun ueber den Inseln", 1958) as well as books for a
wider audience, in which he pleads for tolerance, humanity and coming
to terms with the past ("Der siebente Brunnen", 1971).
