Fortified Churches, mostly situated in elevated places, extended and 
fortified along with their cemeteries for defensive purposes. 
Originated in the 15%%sup th/%  century because of the invasions of 
Carinthia and Styria by the Turks; there are fewer fortified churches 
in the western parts of Austria. In some villages, e.g. Perchtoldsdorf 
(Lower Austria), only the part around the church was fortified.
