Paramilitary Forces, armed military organisations that existed in 
Austria from 1918-1936 and seriously aggravated its already precarious 
domestic political situation. Paramilitary forces were the  
Republikanischer Schutzbund, the  Heimwehr, the  Ostmaerkische 
Sturmscharen and the NSDAP units (Sturmabteilung, SA and 
Schutzstaffel, SS) formed after 1922. The Paramilitary forces were 
dissolved in 1933 and 1936, the members of the Heimwehr units were 
free to join the "Frontmiliz" (Front Militia) of the  
Fatherland Front.
