Weissenkirchen in der Wachau, Lower Austria, market town in the 
district of Krems, alt. 206 m, pop. 1,563, area 
23.29 km%%sup 2/%, summer tourist resort (34,683 overnight stays 
in 1992) and wine growing town on the left bank of the River Danube, 
at the confluence of the Grubbach stream and River Danube; ship 
landing station. - First Lower Austrian Wine Academy, academy of 
painting, Wachau Museum, Fairy Tale Theme Area, summer theatre (every 
August). - Documented mention in 830; parish church (with elements 
from 13%%sup th/%  - 18%%sup th/%  centuries, altered in Baroque style 
1736-1738) with late-Gothic choir, monumental west tower and defensive 
structure (completed in 1530/31, most significant fortified church in 
Lower Austria) with Teisenhofer Courtyard (built from 1439-1468, 
extended in 1542, rows of arcades) integrated into the building 
complex; houses in Renaissance style (Haimingerhof, Turnhof, 
Zelkingerhof and Manghof); town hall (with 16%%sup th/%  century 
core); statue of St. Nepomuk (1733); in the cadastral district of 
Sankt Michael is a late-Gothic (early 16%%sup th/%  century) filial 
church (a church was already mentioned on this site in 987 and 
probably even existed in the 9%%sup th/%  century; oldest parish and 
mother church in the Wachau valley) with Baroque interior and 
prominent western defensive tower, defensive structure, seven 
terracotta figures (called "Hasen", in the shape of rabbits) 
on the roof-ridge of the choir (originals in the Kremser Stadtmuseum), 
Baroque high altar (1690), paintings by M. J. Schmidt and his 
school; charnel house (after 1395) next to the church.
