Weidmann, Paul, b. Vienna, March 26, 1748, d. Vienna, April 
9, 1801. Writer; uncle of Franz Seraph  Weidmann. From 1767 in the 
civil service, wrote successful singspiels and comedies typical of the 
age of Enlightenment ("Der Bettelstudent", 1776; "Die schoene 
Wienerin", 1776) as well as the first German-language literary 
drama based on the legend of Doctor Faustus ("Johann Faust", 
1775).
