Weigl, Josef, b. Eisenstadt (Burgenland), March 28, 1766, 
d. Vienna, Feb. 3, 1846. Composer and conductor; godchild of J.  
Haydn. Promoted by A.  Salieri, 1790 theatre kapellmeister at the 
Vienna court theatres, 1792 1st theatre kapellmeister, 1827 deputy 
court kapellmeister, 1839 retired. His singspiels "Das 
Waisenhaus" and "Die Schweizerfamilie" are amongst the most 
successful ever.

11 masses, approx. 34 operas and singspiels, 18 ballets, 2 
oratorios, 22 cantatas, chamber music.
