b. Linz (Upper Austria), Aug. 16, 1960, conductor. Directed the 
Austrian Youth Orchestra until 1985; from 1986 frequent concerts with 
the London Philharmonic Orchestra and various American orchestras; 
outstanding work as opera conductor since 1987 (Vienna State Opera, 
Berlin, London); from 1995 chief conductor of the Zurich Opera House, 
designated chief conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra from 2002.
