Welwitsch, Friedrich ("Fritz"), b. Maria Saal 
(Carinthia), Feb. 25, 1806, d. London (United Kingdom), Oct. 20, 
1872. Botanist, naturalist, physician. Went to Portugal in 1839, where 
he began botanical research of the Iberian peninsula; 1853-1860 
research trips to Africa; later lived in England. The desert plant 
Welwitschia bainesii (= W. mirabilis) is named after him. He 
shared his scientific collections with institutions in Carinthia and 
Vienna.
