Wernberg, Carinthia, municipality in the district of Villach-Land,
alt. 590 m, pop. 4,365, area 26.42 km%%sup 2/%, location of
industrial and business enterprises, lying on the River Drau/Drava
east of Villach. - Meat products industry, wall socket production,
large-scale carpentry, summer tourism (37,570 overnight stays in
1992). - Renaissance palace overlooking the River Drau, first
documented mention in 1227, re-built from 1570-1575 by G.
Khevenhueller, today a monastery of the Missionary Sisters of the
Precious Blood and a boarding house, court with 2-storey arcades,
palace church (built 1725-1735) with beautiful stuccowork and frescoes
by J. F. Fromiller (around 1730-1740); parish church dedicated to
St. George at Sternberg (documented mention in 1285), Gothic
fortified church, originally Romanesque, with Roman relief stones
integrated into the walls, baptismal font with a painted cover
(15%%sup th/% century), Gothic St. George´s statue (around
1500); castle ruins (documented mention around 1170-1180); Damtschach
palace (built in 1511, altered in 1690), parish church with high altar
(1684) in the south wing; ruins of castle Eichelberg at Umberg.
