Western Railway: Built as k. k. privileged
"Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahn" (Empress Elisabeth Railway) from
1856 to 1858 between Vienna and Linz, the service was extended to
Salzburg in 1860 and from Wels to Passau in 1861; nationalised in1882.
Since the First World War, the Western Railway has also encompassed
the earlier Gisela Railway (Salzburg- Zell am See- Woergl), the North
Tyrolean Railway (Kufstein- Innsbruck, until 1923 operated by
Suedbahn-Gesellschaft), and the Arlberg Railway. During the Second
World War, the Vienna West railway station suffered heavy damage. The
Western Railway was electrified, in the course of reconstruction,
which was completed in 1952.P>
