!!!Wickenburg, Alfred

b. Bad Gleichenberg (Styria), July 26, 1885, 
d. Graz (Styria), Dec. 25, 1978, painter. Belonged to one of the 
leading aristocratic families in Styria (his grand-father Count 
Matthias Konstantin W. was provincial governor of Styria); studied in 
Munich, Paris and Stuttgart; in Stuttgart was particularly influenced 
by Adolf Hoelzel. Combined various artistic styles, Impressionism, 
Expressionism, New Functionalism, Cubism (P. Picasso, G. Braque), 
Pittura Metafisica (G. de Chirico) and realistic tendencies in his 
works. Apart from oil paintings, he created stained-glass windows and 
mural paintings for churches and public buildings (e.g. at the 
seminary of the Vienna archdiocese at Sachsenbrunn, in St.-Joseph's 
Church at Greith bei Gusswerk, in the church of "Maria Schutz auf der 
Kalkleiten", at the catholic educational centre at Seggau castle, in 
the Saint Barbara Chapel of the cathedral of Graz, in Saint Martin's 
Castle (stained-glass window in commemoration of J. Steinberger). 
Awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1956 and the Austrian 
Decoration for Science and Art in 1969.
