b. Vienna, Oct. 5, 1935, experimental writer, cyberneticist. Studied 
law, music, African languages, mathematics at the University of 
Vienna; jazz trumpeter; joined a circle of experimental writers called 
 Wiener Gruppe in 1954; was a member of this group until 1959; 
formulated its basic theoretical principles; head of the department 
for data-processing at Olivetti's from 1959-1967; participated in 
artistic projects; moved to Berlin in 1969 and opened a restaurant; 
has lived in Canada since 1986. In his major work, "die verbesserung 
von mitteleuropa. roman" (1969) he interwove literary experiments with 
philosophic-scholarly and socio-critical approaches. his work also 
gives ample scope to the theory of artificial intelligence ("Probleme 
der Kuenstlichen Intelligenz", 1990). Grand Austrian State Prize in 
1989.
