Wiener Pitaval, collection of spectacular 19%%sup th/% century 
criminal cases, edited by F. Ehrenfels (pseudonym U. Tartaruga) on the 
model of 20 volumes called "Causes celèbres et interessantes" 
published from 1734 by the Frenchman F. Gayot de Pitaval. Ehrenfeld's 
sources were mainly contemporary newspaper articles and light fiction, 
since almost all criminal records had been destroyed in 1850.
