Wienstrom (Wiener Stadtwerke Wienstrom), power supply company for 
Vienna and its environs (first power supply 1902), part of the Wiener 
Stadtwerke since 1949. Wienstrom runs thermal power plants in the 
districts of Simmering, Donaustadt and Leopoldau as well as 
hydroelectric power stations in Opponitz and Gaming (Lower Austria). 
It also has the right to draw power from the Danube power stations at 
Greifenstein and Freudenau. All power stations have cogeneration 
facilities (86% primary energy exploitation). The new power station 
which is under construction on the site of the Donaustadt power 
station will play a particularly significant role and replace a number 
of older power stations. Wienstrom is the largest district-heating 
provider in Austria.
