Wies, Styria, market town in the district of Deutschlandsberg, alt. 
332 m, pop. 2, 580, area 14.94 km%%sup 2/%, place of 
pilgrimage in the valley of the River Sulm. - Agricultural trade 
school, regional experimental station for special cultures, plastics 
industries, production of fuse boxes, wood processing, construction, 
trade. Parish and pilgrimage church (built 1774-1782) with 
miracle-working statue (middle of 18th century), Burgstall Renaissance 
castle (first documented mention 1280, present construction 16th%%sup  
/%century); St. Veit filial church with Gothic choir in the 
cadastral district of Altenmarkt, numerous frescoes (around 1400) and 
high altar (1686). In the vicinity, Seltenriegelquelle spring 
(bottling of mineral water).
