b. Český Těšín, near Wischau, Czech Republic. Jan. 20, 1838, 
d. Vienna, Oct. 9, 1916, botanist, plant anatomist and physiologist. 
From 1870 Professor at the forestry school of Mariabrunn, at the 
University of Vienna from 1873-1909 (vice-chancellor in 1898/99); 
teacher at the polytechnical school until 1880. Interested in 
technological microscopy and plant raw products; founded the 
Department of Plant Physiology at the University of Vienna in 1873 
(the first of this kind); by means of precise research methods, 
promoted the study of the technological properties of vegetable raw 
materials. Expeditions to Egypt, India, Java, Sumatra, to the Arctic 
and North America.
