b. Muenster in Westphalia (Germany), Feb. 19, 1770,
d. Vienna, Aug. 29, 1854, army commander (field marshal). Took part in
the Turkish War from 1788-1790, in the battles against revolutionary
France from 1792-1800 and in the Austrian campaigns against Napoleon
in 1805 and in 1809 (adjutant-general of Archduke Karl); as field
marshal lieutenant, commander of a division in 1813/14; 1816 military
commander of Austrian Silesia; 1820 general commander in Venetia; 1824
head of staff of the quartermaster general; 1830-1840 commanding
general in Vienna; awarded the military Order of Maria Theresia for
bravery in the battle of Austerlitz; Knight of the Order of the Golden
Fleece in 1852. Buried next to Radetzky at the Heldenberg at
Kleinwetzdorf.
