Winklern, Carinthia, municipality in the district of Spittal an der 
Drau, alt. 965 m, pop. 1,127, area 37.39 km%%sup 2/%, summer 
tourism (49,947 overnight stays in 1992) in the Upper Moelltal valley 
at the foot of the Schober mountains, near the 
Grossglockner-Hochalpenstrasse Road. - Training Centre of the Federal 
Armed Forces, district office of the Office of Youth Affairs, office 
of the forest guards, district Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry, 
district office of KELAG; metal, meat and wood processing; trade zone. 
- First documented mention in the 11th century, formerly an important 
toll-gate. Late-Gothic parish church (15th - 16th century) with fresco 
of St. Christopher (around 1470), fresco of the Last Judgement 
(1519), painted Virgin (early 16th century); educational trail on the 
area's cultural and agricultural landscape.
