b. Gaweinstal (Lower Austria), April 21, 1912, notary public and 
politician (Austrian People's Party, OeVP). Member of the Nationalrat 
from 1953-1975 (1966-1970 also leader of the parliamentary group of 
the OeVP); Staatssekretaer at the Federal Ministry of Finance from 
1956-1959; Vice-Chancellor from 1968-1970; Secretary General of the 
OeVP from 1960-1970, 1970/71 Federal Chairman of the  Oesterreichische 
Volkspartei (Austrian People's Party, OeVP), Federal Chairman of the 
OeVP's Association of Senior Citizens from 1976-1988. a conservative, 
he belonged to a group of intraparty reformers who in the 1960s 
advocated stricter adherence to the party's basic political 
principles.
