Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel, Lower Austria, town in the district of
Mistelbach, alt. 176 m, pop. 5,696, area 44.36 km%%sup 2/%,
industrial town mainly inhabited by commuters (especially to Vienna)
on the River Russbach in the Weinviertel region.- District court,
branches of the district commission, youth office, district chamber of
agriculture, economic chamber, Lower Austrian road construction
authority, road maintenance depot, marriage, family and life
counselling, Volkshaus community centre, Maria Lourdes monastery;
multifarious economic structure with 2,250 persons in gainful
employment (1991); around 61% of the population are employed in the
production sector: metal industry, food, beverage and tobacco industry
(sweets, spices, tea), production of plastic goods and loft windows,
fair equipment, printing shop, building and construction industry,
central wine storage facility of the winegrowers´ cooperatives.
- First documented mention 1170, given the status of a town in 1968;
parish church, baroque hall church (tower constructed in 1754) with
Gothic choir (before 1350) and Baroque interior; former castle (first
documented mention 1187, mediaeval core, changed to Baroque style in
the 18%%sup th/% century); town hall (1803); Trinity column (1714);
cast of the Wolkersdorf relief (stone relief from around 1300, the
original can be seen in the Niederoesterreichisches Landesmuseum).
