m, pop. 1,834, area 47.66 km%%sup 2/%, in the valley of the River
Grosse Ysper, at the foot of the Grosser Peilstein mountain (alt. 1061
m) in the southern Waldviertel region. - Advanced-level school of
ecology and economics with boarding house (private); concrete works,
trade; Waldviertel workshops, popular destination for day-trips
(Ysperklamm gorge). - At Ysper, parish church with Gothic core and
Baroque nave, massive tower and neo-Gothic interior. Pillory (early
17%%sup th/% century); late-Romanesque/Gothic parish church in
Altenmarkt, altered in Baroque style in 1738/39, copies of Gothic
stained glass; museum of local history and culture in former school
building.
