1949-1956 co-adjutor of the bishop of Linz , 1956-1980 Bishop of Linz. 
Participated in the Second Vatican Council; 1970-1972 head of the 
diocesan synod of Linz; promoted liturgy and extended religious care 
for refugees and migrant workers.
